Overheard in Durham--Vol. V

Wednesday, Feb 1
10:45 am
Music History class (1650-1850)

The Professor is explaining the harmonic structure of the Henry Purcell opera "Dido and Aeneas"; Aeneas is a prince of Troy who has wandered from his land into Egypt and fallen in love with Dido, Queen of Carthage:

"And notice that on the word 'lost', there's another dissonant chord, a diminished chord. Aeneas really sounds lost."
